Uji River (宇治川, Ujigawa) flows through the heart of Uji, dividing the town into two and offering a scenic landscape that invites relaxation and recreation. Visitors can enjoy boat cruises and experience the unique cormorant fishing, popular from July to September. Riverbanks are lined with teahouses and restaurants serving Uji’s famous tea, tea-flavored treats, and picturesque views. The Uji Bridge, one of Japan’s oldest bridges, stands as a historical landmark and a key feature in The Tale of Genji, with several monuments marking its influence.
