Koshoji Temple

6 of 6 in attractions in Uji

Koshoji Temple (興聖寺, Kōshōji) in Uji is a serene Zen temple with a rich history dating back to 1233. Originally built in Kyoto, it was relocated to Uji in 1648. The temple features a beautifully maintained garden with a five-storied stone pagoda, offering a peaceful retreat for visitors. Koshoji remains an active Zen temple, preserving its tranquil atmosphere and traditional charm.

In autumn, the temple transforms into a breathtaking sight as maple trees lining the approach create a vivid tunnel of red and gold. This stunning foliage, best viewed in late November, makes Koshoji one of Uji’s most scenic spots.
