Lake Ashinoko
Lake Ashinoko (芦ノ湖) is a scenic crater lake formed by Mount Hakone’s eruption 3,000 years ago. With Mount Fuji as its backdrop, it is a symbol of Hakone’s natural beauty. The lake’s shores remain largely undeveloped, aside from small towns and lakeside resorts. The best views of Mount Fuji can be enjoyed from Moto-Hakone, the Hakone Detached Palace Garden, or while cruising the lake. However, clear views depend on weather conditions, with the best chances during colder seasons and early morning or late afternoon.
Visitors can explore the lake aboard sightseeing boats operated by Hakone Sightseeing Boats and Hakone Pleasure Cruise. These boats connect Moto-Hakone, Hakone-machi, Togendai, and Hakone-en, offering a relaxing way to admire the lake. The Hakone Free Pass covers the pirate ship-style boats but not the Hakone Pleasure Cruise. Whether by boat or from the shore, Lake Ashinoko offers breathtaking views and a peaceful retreat in the heart of Hakone.

5/5 - Excellent
I recently visited Lake Ashinoko, and it was an unforgettable experience. The lake’s calm waters, surrounded by lush mountains, create a peaceful atmosphere that’s perfect for a relaxing getaway. I was lucky to visit on a clear day, and the view of Mount Fuji reflected in the water was absolutely breathtaking.
The sightseeing cruise was a great way to enjoy the lake, offering beautiful panoramic views. I also visited Hakone Shrine, which is right by the water and has a stunning torii gate standing in the lake. The combination of nature, history, and the fresh mountain air made this visit truly special. I highly recommend it to anyone exploring Hakone!1 month ago — by Wesley
