Hakone has been a beloved hot spring resort for centuries, offering a relaxing retreat in a stunning natural setting. With over a dozen natural springs, the region supplies numerous bathhouses and ryokan with high-quality thermal waters. Yumoto, the largest and oldest hot spring town at Hakone’s entrance, is known for its rich history and excellent onsen experiences. Beyond Yumoto, hot spring facilities are scattered throughout Hakone’s hills, valleys, and along the shores of Lake Ashi, providing a variety of soothing bathing options.

Visitors can enjoy onsen baths in public bathhouses or traditional ryokan. Many ryokan welcome both overnight guests and daytime visitors, allowing anyone to experience Hakone’s rejuvenating waters. While guests staying at ryokan can enjoy the baths for free, daytime visitors typically pay an entrance fee ranging from 500 to 2000 yen. Whether for a short visit or an extended stay, Hakone’s onsen culture offers a perfect escape into relaxation.

I recently visited several hot springs in Hakone, and each experience was unique. The most memorable was Tenzan Onsen – the outdoor baths nestled in the forest provided a truly peaceful escape. The natural setting was so relaxing. I also enjoyed Hakone Kamon, where the rustic wooden baths and serene atmosphere made for a perfect, tranquil retreat. Hakone Yuryo was another highlight, with its beautiful forest views and private bath options. Overall, each onsen offered something special, but Tenzan Onsen stands out as my favorite!
