Owakudani (大涌谷), located in the Hakone area, is a unique volcanic zone formed by the last eruption of Mount Hakone around 3,000 years ago. Visitors can experience the active volcanic landscape, with sulfurous fumes, hot springs, and bubbling pools. The area offers stunning views of Mount Fuji on clear days, making it a popular spot for sightseeing. A short 30-minute walking trail takes you through steam vents and pools, with admission requiring a reservation. The famous black eggs, cooked in hot spring pools, are said to extend life by seven years.

For adventurous visitors, there are hiking trails that lead from the ropeway station to the peaks of Mount Kamiyama and Mount Komagatake, offering dramatic views along the way. Although these trails are currently closed due to volcanic activity, an alternative trail leads to Lake Ashinoko, offering a scenic hike around the lake’s shore. This round-trip trail takes about 4.5 hours and is connected to the Hakone Ropeway, making it easy to explore the area. Owakudani offers a mix of adventure, culture, and natural beauty.
