Hokokuji Temple
Hokokuji Temple (報国寺, Hōkokuji) is a hidden gem in eastern Kamakura, known for its serene bamboo grove and rich samurai history. Founded in the Muromachi Period, it was the family temple of the Ashikaga and Uesugi Clans. Though the main hall was rebuilt after the Great Kanto Earthquake, it still houses a statue of Buddha (Shaka Nyorai). A charming bell tower with a thatched roof stands nearby, echoing the temple’s historic past.
Behind the temple, over 2,000 bamboo stalks create a peaceful retreat. Winding paths lead to a tea house, where visitors can enjoy matcha while taking in the tranquil scenery. Nearby, ancient cave tombs hold the ashes of Ashikaga lords, adding to the site’s deep history.
