Tsurugaoka Hachimangu (鶴岡八幡宮, Tsurugaoka Hachimangū), Kamakura's most important shrine, was founded in 1063 by Minamoto Yoriyoshi and later moved to its current site by Minamoto Yoritomo in 1180. Dedicated to Hachiman, the patron god of the Minamoto family and samurai, it enshrines spirits of Emperor Ojin, Hime-gami, and Empress Jingu.

Visitors reach the shrine via a long, wide approach lined with torii gates. The main hall, located at the top of a stairway, includes a small museum displaying historical treasures. The shrine also features ponds, a dance stage, and seasonal gardens.
