Jochiji Temple

20 of 26 in attractions in Kamakura

Jochiji Temple (浄智寺, Jōchiji) is one of Kamakura's five great Zen temples, known for its calm atmosphere and historical significance. Founded in 1283 by the ruling Hojo family, it was created to honor a son who passed away prematurely. Once a large temple complex, Jochiji is now peaceful and serene, offering a perfect spot for reflection. The main hall displays a Buddhist trinity with statues of Amida, Shaka, and Miroku Buddha.

Visitors can enjoy a circular path through the temple's tranquil garden, past a graveyard and caves. At the entrance, one of Kamakura's famous wells is located, though it has faded over time. The Daibutsu hiking trail starts next to Jochiji, leading to the Great Buddha in about an hour. This blend of history, beauty, and nature makes Jochiji a rewarding stop.
