Kegon Waterfall (Kegon no taki)

2 of 24 in attractions in Nikko

Kegon Waterfall (華厳の滝, Kegon no taki) is one of Nikko’s most famous attractions, standing nearly 100 meters tall. Ranked among Japan’s top three waterfalls, it shares the honor with Nachi and Fukuroda waterfalls. This stunning fall is the only outlet for the waters of Lake Chuzenji. You can view it from both a free observation platform and a paid one at the base, which requires taking a 100-meter deep elevator for an even closer look.

The falls are especially beautiful during autumn, typically from mid to late October, when the surrounding trees are at their peak color. Winter also offers a unique sight when the falls freeze almost completely. Visitors can enjoy the falls and Lake Chuzenji together from the Akechidaira Observatory, which is accessible by ropeway from Akechidaira Plateau.
