Taiyuin is located 200 meters west of Toshogu, about a 30-40 minute walk or a 10-minute bus ride (350 yen one way, 600 yen day pass, free with Nikko Passes) from Tobu and JR Nikko stations.

Iemitsu Mausoleum (Taiyuin)
Taiyuin (大猷院, Taiyūin) is the mausoleum of Tokugawa Iemitsu, the third shogun and grandson of Ieyasu. Built in a more modest style than nearby Toshogu Shrine out of respect for Iemitsu’s grandfather, it blends Buddhist and Shinto elements, which was common before the Meiji Period. While Toshogu became a shrine, Taiyuin was made a subtemple of Rinnoji Temple.
Visitors can explore Taiyuin’s impressive gates, including the vermillion Niomon and ornate Nitenmon Gates. Inside, the Haiden offers a beautiful interior with intricate carvings and golden details, while Iemitsu’s mausoleum adds a dignified charm.
