Akechidaira Plateau is located along the Irohazaka Winding Road, but it can’t be accessed from the downhill road. In 2019, two-way traffic was stopped between Chuzenji Onsen and the plateau.
From JR or Tobu Nikko Station, take a bus to Chuzenji Onsen or Yumoto Onsen and get off at Akechidaira bus stop (35 minutes, 1250 yen, 3-4 buses per hour). Buses in the opposite direction don’t stop here. The plateau can get very crowded in autumn, especially on weekends, with traffic jams and limited parking.

Akechidaira Plateau
Akechidaira Plateau (明智平) offers breathtaking views of the Irohazaka Winding Road and the valley below, especially in autumn when the colors are vibrant. Located near the top of the winding road, visitors can stop at the parking lot with a free observation area to take in the scenic beauty.
A rest house nearby offers a cafeteria, souvenir shop, and access to the Akechidaira Ropeway. The ropeway takes visitors up to a higher observation platform with stunning views of Kegon Waterfall and Lake Chuzenji. For a more adventurous experience, a hiking trail to the observation deck and Mount Hangetsuyama is available.
