Kirifuri Waterfall (Kirifuri no taki)

15 of 24 in attractions in Nikko

Kirifuri Waterfall (霧降の滝, Kirifuri no taki) is a stunning 75-meter, two-tiered cascade nestled below the Kirifuri Highlands, just a few kilometers from Nikko’s famous temples and shrines. True to its name, meaning "falling mist," the waterfall creates a fine mist as it crashes against the rocks, adding to its mystical charm. The surrounding landscape transforms beautifully with the seasons—lush green in spring and summer, and ablaze with red, orange, and gold in autumn, making it a breathtaking sight year-round.

Although the former hiking trail to the base has been closed, visitors can admire Kirifuri Waterfall from a scenic observation deck across the valley. The deck is easily accessible via a short, mostly paved 10-minute walk from the parking lot and bus stop, where restaurants and public facilities are available. The best time for autumn foliage is from late October to early November, when the vibrant colors frame the falls in a spectacular display.
