Oya History Museum
The Oya History Museum (大谷資料館, Ōya Shiryōkan) in Utsunomiya is a fascinating underground world carved from a former stone quarry. Once a major source of Oya Stone, this vast cavernous space was mined for centuries and played a role in famous architecture like Tokyo’s former Imperial Hotel. Today, visitors can explore its massive underground halls, spanning over 20,000 square meters, with atmospheric lighting, art installations, and historical exhibits showcasing the tools and techniques used in mining.
These cool, naturally air-conditioned caves create a surreal setting for concerts, weddings, and exhibitions. A chapel and stage carved directly from the rock add to the museum’s unique appeal. The vast underground halls, illuminated with colorful lights, provide a breathtaking experience. Whether you're drawn by history, architecture, or the dramatic scenery, the Oya History Museum is a must-visit hidden gem near Utsunomiya.
