Irohazaka Winding Road is a breathtaking mountain road linking Nikko to Lake Chuzenji, climbing over 400 meters with its famous hairpin turns. Named after the old Japanese syllabary "iroha," it originally had 48 curves, symbolizing the full alphabet. Today, the road is a scenic highlight, especially in autumn when vibrant red and gold leaves transform the landscape.

From mid-October to early November, Irohazaka becomes one of Nikko’s most stunning autumn spots, attracting many visitors. The colorful foliage, combined with the thrilling mountain drive, makes it an unforgettable experience. However, expect traffic jams during peak season.

From Nikko, take a Tobu bus from JR or Tobu Nikko Station bound for Chuzenji Onsen or Yumoto Onsen. The ride takes about 40 minutes and follows the Irohazaka Winding Road. If driving, follow Route 120, which includes the one-way uphill and downhill sections of Irohazaka. Expect traffic delays in autumn due to the popularity of the scenic route.
