Mount Hangetsuyama (Hangetsusan)

22 of 24 in attractions in Nikko

Mount Hangetsuyama (半月山, also pronounced as Hangetsusan), located at the southeastern edge of Lake Chuzenji, offers stunning views of the Okunikko region, including Lake Chuzenji and Mount Nantai. This mountain is a great spot for hiking with trails leading to the summit. An observation deck near the top offers fantastic views, especially from mid-October to early November when the autumn colors transform the scenery. The area is a popular destination for leaf-viewing during the fall.

For those who prefer not to hike to the summit, a winding road leads up three-quarters of the mountain, accessible by bus, taxi, or rental car. From the parking lot, a 30-minute hike to the top along a steep trail awaits. The Chuzenjiko Skyline road, a former toll road now free to use, passes an observation deck offering views of the lake. The road is closed from late November to mid-April.
