Mount Misen

2 of 2 in attractions in Miyajima Island

Mount Misen (弥山), the highest peak on Miyajima at 500 meters, offers stunning views of the Seto Inland Sea and Hiroshima City. Known for its spiritual significance, the mountain is linked to Kobo Daishi, founder of the Shingon sect, who introduced Buddhism here. Near the summit, the Misen Hondo (Main Hall) and Reikado (Hall of the Spiritual Flame) stand as sacred sites. The Reikado houses a flame said to have burned since Kobo Daishi's time, which also ignited the Flame of Peace in Hiroshima’s Peace Memorial Park.

Reaching the summit takes 1.5 to 2 hours via three hiking trails: the steep but short Momijidani Course, the scenic Daisho-in Course, and the forested Omoto Course. For an easier ascent, a ropeway from town leads near the summit, though some walking is still required. Wildlife, including deer and, more rarely, wild monkeys, can sometimes be spotted along the trails, adding to Mount Misen's natural charm.
