The Earthquake Museum is in HAT Kobe, a newer district east of Kobe’s city center. It’s a 10-minute walk from Iwaya Station on the Hanshin Main Line (4 minutes, 160 yen from Sannomiya Station) or a 15-minute walk from Nada Station on the JR Kobe Line (3 minutes, 140 yen from Sannomiya Station). The Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art is nearby.





Kobe Earthquake Memorial Museum
The Earthquake Memorial Museum in Kobe commemorates the Great Hanshin Awaji Earthquake, which struck on January 17, 1995, at 5:46 a.m., causing over 5,000 deaths and widespread destruction. Opened in 2002 as part of the Disaster Reduction and Human Renovation Institution (人と防災未来センター, Hito to Bōsai Mirai Center), the museum preserves the memory of this tragedy while promoting disaster prevention.
Visitors can watch realistic earthquake footage on a large-screen theater and a documentary about Kobe’s recovery. Interactive exhibits and educational games offer hands-on experiences, teaching disaster preparedness and resilience. The museum provides a moving and educational experience, raising awareness of earthquake safety.
