Akashi Kaikyo Bridge

16 of 39 in attractions in Kobe

The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge (明石海峡大橋) is the longest suspension bridge in the world, stretching nearly 4 kilometers. Opened in 1998, it connects Kobe with Awaji Island, crossing the Akashi Strait. As part of the Kobe-Awaji-Naruto Expressway, this marvel of engineering also links Honshu and Shikoku islands.

For a closer look at the bridge, you can walk along the Maiko Marine Promenade. This observatory walkway is 50 meters above the water and offers stunning views of the bridge’s interior, Akashi Strait, and Osaka Bay. The Bridge Exhibition Center, located on the Kobe side, also shares fascinating details about the bridge’s construction and other suspension bridges worldwide (information available in Japanese).
