Arima Onsen is a small town, and all the attractions are within walking distance of each other.

Onsenji Temple
Onsenji Temple (温泉寺), located in the heart of Arima Onsen, is home to Onsenji Misoshian, a fascinating facility showcasing the rich history of the area’s hot springs. The exhibit features picture scrolls that depict the legend of Arima Onsen and the prominent Buddhist priests, Gyoki and Ninsai. Gyoki, one of Japan's most revered figures, was the first priest to receive the title “daisoji,” the highest honor for Buddhist priests. A statue of Gyoki can be found at Negai no Niwa, a tranquil garden within the temple grounds.
The temple is not only a historical and spiritual site but also a cultural hub where visitors can explore the deep connection between Buddhism and Arima’s hot spring culture. Gyoki, who apprenticed under the famous Genjosanzo, is said to have inspired the character Sanzohoshi in the Chinese literary classic Saiyuki. Onsenji Misoshian is currently closed for maintenance as of August 2022, but the temple remains a peaceful place for reflection and spiritual connection.
