Genkyuen Garden is at the east side of the hill where Hikone Castle’s main keep stands, just outside the inner moat. It’s a 20-30 minute walk from Hikone Station.

Genkyuen Garden
Genkyuen Garden (玄宮園) is a beautifully designed landscape garden featuring a central pond and a scenic circular walking trail. Built in 1677 on the grounds of Hikone Castle by the local lord, it was originally created for the entertainment of his family and guests. The garden’s design is inspired by a Tang Chinese palace garden, offering a peaceful retreat surrounded by natural beauty.
The pond is dotted with four small islands, each connected by charming bridges. From the garden, you can also enjoy the "borrowed scenery" of Hikone Castle's main keep, which stands on the hill behind. Visitors can also relax by the pond in a cluster of traditional wooden buildings, where they can enjoy a cup of tea for 500 yen, just like the lord’s guests once did. A visit to Genkyuen Garden offers a tranquil and historic experience.
