Omi Jingu Shrine
Omi Jingu Shrine (近江神宮), located in Otsu, is dedicated to Emperor Tenji, the founder of Otsu-Kyo. Built in 1940 to commemorate 2,600 years since the reign of Japan's first emperor, the shrine is surrounded by a tranquil forest, creating a solemn and serene atmosphere. The shrine features a vermillion two-storied gate and the Main Hall, showcasing Omi-style architecture. Emperor Tenji is also famous for introducing the water clock to Japan, and a museum dedicated to water clocks and sun dials is located on the shrine grounds.
Omi Jingu Shrine is not only a place of historical significance but also a cultural hub. It hosts the national karuta (card game) championships and is said to be linked to the game's creation. Additionally, traditional horseback archery is performed here every year on the first Sunday in June. The shrine’s rich history, serene location, and cultural events make it a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the area.
