Ishiyamadera Temple (石山寺), a historic Shingon Buddhist temple in Ōtsu, sits on the scenic banks of the Seta River. Founded in 747 CE by Reverend Rouben to fulfill Emperor Shōmu’s wish, it became a major pilgrimage site for Kannon devotees, including imperial and noble families. The temple is the 13th stop on the Saikoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage, attracting visitors seeking spiritual solace. Its natural beauty, with seasonal flowers like cherry blossoms, peonies, and camellias, has earned it the name "Temple of Flowers." The autumn moon from Ishiyamadera Hill is also one of the eight most breathtaking sights in the Ōmi region.

Beyond its spiritual significance, Ishiyamadera is deeply rooted in Japan’s literary and artistic heritage. Legend says that Murasaki Shikibu, inspired by the full moon in 1004 CE, conceived the idea for The Tale of Genji here. The temple preserves this legacy through "The Room of Genji" in its main hall. Built upon a sacred wollastonite rock, Ishiyamadera is home to countless national treasures, including the Hondō, the Tahōtō Pagoda, and centuries-old Buddhist scrolls and paintings. A visit to this temple is a journey through history, culture, and nature.
