Katsuno District
The Katsuno District (高島びれっじ) is a charming, ancient castle town brimming with history and old-world charm. Steeped in tradition, visitors can wander through streets lined with relics of its past, including the grand sōmon gates, samurai houses, and the old government outpost, known as the jin'ya. These well-preserved sites offer a glimpse into the district’s rich cultural heritage.
One of the district's highlights is a 150-year-old merchant house, meticulously restored by volunteers from the Chamber of Commerce. Now known as Takashima Village, it houses eight halls and serves as a lively spot where you can enjoy local food, experiences, and souvenirs. While foreign language support is still developing, the district offers an authentic, enriching experience of traditional Japan.

I had a fantastic time exploring this wonderful spot! Each place offers something unique, starting with the Wax Town Candle Workshop, where I got to create my own candles—a fun and creative activity! There’s also Donki and Central Bakery, which are perfect for grabbing a quick bite or picking up some souvenirs. If you're into traditional crafts, don’t miss the Dye Workshop Ifu, where I learned about the art of dyeing.
For a more relaxed experience, I highly recommend stopping by Takashima Wani Cafe for a refreshing drink or Cafe Alivio for a peaceful break. If you’re after something more exciting, Zero Gravity is definitely worth checking out. There’s a bit of everything here, with something for everyone! It’s just a short 5-minute walk from Omi-Takashima Station, making it super convenient to visit. Definitely worth a stop if you're in the area!1 week ago — by Wesley
