Omizo Castle Ruins and Otomega Pond

8 of 9 in attractions in Takashima City

Omizo Castle Ruins (大溝城) and Otomega Pond (乙女ヶ池) offer a captivating journey back in time, located just southeast of Omi-Takashima Station. The castle’s tower keep, nestled on a forested hill and surrounded by ancient stone walls, was constructed during the Azuchi-Momoyama period (1568–1600 C.E.) by Oda Nobuzumi. Nobuzumi, who had fortified Shinjō Castle, created a thriving castle town in the area, moving merchant houses and shrines to this strategic location.

Nearby, Otomega Pond, once serving as the castle's outer moat, is now a picturesque inlet of Lake Biwa. It's a popular spot for photography, offering a stunning backdrop of nature. Visitors can also capture the iconic humpback bridge, adding to the beauty of the scene. It’s a wonderful location for those who love history and scenic views.
