Daishi Kyokai

8 of 8 in attractions in Koyasan

Daishi Kyokai (大師教会, Daishi Kyōkai), the administrative heart of Shingon Buddhism, plays a vital role in preserving and spreading the teachings of Kobo Daishi, the sect's founder. The complex features two distinct buildings: the Henjoden, a traditional temple hall built in 1915, dedicated to Kobo Daishi, and a modern building for administration, lectures, and training. The modern building also has an English information desk for international visitors. Daishi Kyokai invites visitors to actively engage in the practice of Buddhism by offering two main activities: the Buddhist precepts ceremony (jukai) and sutra copying (shakyo).

The jukai ceremony allows participants to formally repent past misdeeds and follow Buddhist principles, without requiring one to become Buddhist. Held in a darkened room adjacent to the Henjoden, participants recite the Ten Wholesome Precepts after a priest in a meditative atmosphere. The ceremony lasts about 30 minutes, with each participant receiving a certificate. Shakyo, the practice of copying sutras, is another way visitors can engage with Buddhist tradition. Participants trace over the Heart Sutra, providing a peaceful and meditative experience. No prior reservation is needed for either activity.
