Kumano Hongu Taisha (熊野本宮大社) is one of the three iconic shrines of the Kumano region, holding a special place in Japan's spiritual history. It enshrines its own deity, along with the deities of two other Kumano shrines, Hayatama Taisha and Nachi Taisha, and the Sun Goddess, Amaterasu. As the head shrine of over 3000 Kumano shrines across Japan, it attracts visitors seeking a deep cultural and spiritual experience. The shrine, originally located at Oyu no Hara, was moved in 1889 due to flooding and is now one kilometer away. In front of the Oyu no Hara site stands the world’s largest torii gate, towering at 33 meters.

Located in the heart of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage routes, Kumano Hongu Taisha is a must-visit for those interested in Japan’s ancient traditions. For those short on time, a two-hour walk from Hosshinmon Oji along the Nakahechi route to Hongu offers a memorable experience. After visiting the shrine, explore nearby hot spring towns like Yunomine Onsen, Kawayu Onsen, and Wataze Onsen, each offering unique onsen experiences. Yunomine's Tsuboyu bath is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site, while Kawayu lets you create your own hot spring bath along a river, and Wataze is home to the largest outdoor bath in western Japan.
