Kumano Hayatama Taisha
Kumano Hayatama Taisha (熊野速玉大社), one of the three important Kumano shrines, is located in Shingu City on the southeast coast of the Kii Peninsula. This shrine has stood on the Kumano Riverbank since at least the 12th century, though evidence of worship in the area dates back to the 3rd century. The current buildings were rebuilt relatively recently, but the site’s religious significance stretches back for centuries. According to an ancient myth, the Kumano deities descended to earth on a rock near the shrine, which is now a sacred object of worship.
Inside the shrine grounds stands an ancient tree, believed to be over 800 years old, which is also revered. These natural elements highlight the shrine’s connection to nature worship. Hayatama Taisha also houses a Treasure Hall displaying a collection of national treasures, including offerings brought by pilgrims along the Kumano Kodo. This small museum boasts more national treasures than many larger institutions, making it a fascinating stop for history and culture enthusiasts.
