Ryusenji Temple

2 of 2 in attractions in Dorogawa Onsen

Ryusenji Temple (龍泉寺), located at the beginning of the sacred path to Mount Omine, is a significant site for Shugendo practitioners. Founded around 645, it is also known as "Dragon Spring Temple" due to its many dragon and snake motifs scattered across the complex. Visitors can admire the temple's sacred pond and waterfall, with the latter holding a special significance for men who are allowed to pray beneath it as part of their spiritual practice. The main hall is guarded by a striking pair of demon figures, further adding to the temple’s mystical atmosphere.

One of the most intriguing aspects of Ryusenji Temple is its legend. According to local folklore, a man discovered that his wife was a giant white snake. She entrusted him with caring for their child before retreating into the temple’s pond. She requested he ring the temple bell three times in the morning and six times in the evening to help her pass the days, a ritual that continues to this day. This combination of rich history, spiritual significance, and captivating legend makes Ryusenji Temple a must-see destination.
