Meganebashi Bridge

8 of 19 in attractions in Nagasaki

Meganebashi Bridge (眼鏡橋, lit. Spectacles Bridge), is the most famous of Nagasaki’s stone bridges, spanning the scenic Nakashima River. Built in 1634 under the guidance of a Chinese monk who later became Kofukuji Temple’s resident priest, this historic bridge is an important cultural property. Its name comes from the way its twin arches reflect in the water, creating an image that looks like a pair of eyeglasses. Although severely damaged by a flood in 1982, Meganebashi was carefully restored using its original stones, preserving its timeless charm.

A walk along the stone pathways lining the river offers a peaceful experience with picturesque views of the bridges and flowing water. Steps from street level provide easy access to this relaxing riverside stroll. The combination of history, scenic beauty, and cultural significance makes Meganebashi Bridge a must-visit spot in Nagasaki, perfect for photography and quiet reflection.
