Shimane Museum of Ancient Izumo

The Shimane Museum of Ancient Izumo (島根県立古代出雲歴史博物館, Shimanekenritsu Kodai Izumo Rekishi Hakubutsukan) is located next to the famous Izumo Taisha Shrine and explores the fascinating history of the region. This museum delves into the rich archeology and culture of Izumo, focusing on the shrine's history, mythology, and construction. The exhibits cover everything from prehistoric times to the shrine’s development over a thousand years. Visitors can learn about the people and culture that helped shape the shrine and the surrounding area.

Among the museum’s highlights is the display of a large pillar, over a meter in diameter, which raises questions about how the grand shrine may have been built. One exhibit features conceptual models of the enormous structure, while hundreds of archaeological artifacts, including bronze swords and bells, are on display. The museum also showcases the Izumo no Kuni Fudoki, Japan’s only complete version of the ancient reports of Izumo Province. Special exhibitions are held periodically.
