Taikodani Inari Shrine

2 of 8 in attractions in Tsuwano

The Taikodani Inari Shrine (太皷谷稲成神社, Taikodani Inari Jinja), located northeast of Tsuwano Castle, is one of Japan’s five great Inari shrines. Built in the mid-18th century, it was intended to protect the castle from evil spirits believed to come from the northeast, which was considered an inauspicious direction. Today, the shrine is a popular destination for those praying for good fortune, prosperity, and a successful harvest.

Visitors begin their journey at the southern end of Tsuwano’s old town, where a pathway lined with red torii gates awaits. A 15-minute climb through this beautiful tunnel of vermilion gates leads to the main shrine grounds. The halls, adorned with sacred straw ropes, create a serene atmosphere, making it a must-visit destination in Shimane Prefecture.
