The old town is located southeast of Tsuwano Station. It takes about 10 minutes to walk to the Tonomachi district from the station.

Tsuwano Old Town
Tsuwano Old Town (殿町, Tonomachi), often referred to as "Small Kyoto," is a charming destination that will transport you back in time. Known for its preserved historical buildings, Tsuwano’s Old Town captures the essence of Japan's past with its traditional atmosphere. The highlight of this area is the Tonomachi district, a beautifully maintained part of the former samurai district. Walking through this district, visitors can explore earthen walls, historic buildings, and a tranquil water canal filled with colorful carps.
While the Tonomachi district is the most pristine, the former merchant district, located between Tsuwano Station and Tonomachi, offers a more relaxed, less preserved atmosphere. This area is still rich in history, featuring traditional buildings, old-fashioned facades, and several sake shops. A few museums in the area also showcase the town’s past, making it an interesting and peaceful destination for history enthusiasts and culture lovers alike.
