Getting around

Most of Takayama’s attractions are within walking distance from the city center, with JR Takayama Station and the Takayama Hida Bus Center located about a ten-minute walk across the Miyagawa River from the old town. However, some attractions, like the Hida no Sato open-air museum and Matsuri no Mori festival museum, require a longer walk or a 10-15 minute bus ride.

Tourists can take the Sarubobo Bus, which runs every 30 minutes from the station to Hida no Sato, with some buses continuing to Matsuri no Mori. The Machinami Bus and two Takumi Bus lines operate around the town center. Bus fares are 100 yen per ride or 500 yen for a 1-day pass, allowing unlimited rides. Additionally, guided rickshaw tours are available in the old town, with a 30-minute tour for two people priced at 7000 yen.
