Oyama Shrine

8 of 21 in Kanazawa

Oyama Shrine (尾山神社, Oyama Jinja), dedicated to Maeda Toshiie, the first lord of the Maeda Clan, was built in 1599 by his successor, Maeda Toshinaga. Initially located on Mount Utatsu, the shrine was later moved to its current spot. Its unique gate, designed by a Dutch architect, blends European and Asian religious elements. The first story shows a fusion of Japanese and Chinese influences, while the upper stories, originally serving as a lighthouse, showcase Dutch-style stained glass windows.

The shrine grounds are beautiful, featuring a statue of Lord Toshiie. Visitors can also enjoy a peaceful strolling garden with ponds and bridges designed to resemble harps and lutes. The combination of historical significance, stunning architecture, and tranquil surroundings makes Oyama Shrine a must-visit in Kanazawa.
