Hyakumangoku Festival

23 of 23 in Kanazawa

The Hyakumangoku Festival (金沢百万石まつり) celebrates Kanazawa's rich history, commemorating Lord Maeda Toshiie’s 1583 entry into Kanazawa Castle. Held every June on the first weekend, it honors nearly 300 years of the Maeda family's rule. This grand festival brings the past to life with a stunning parade from Kanazawa Station to the castle, featuring 2,000 locals dressed in 16th-century costumes as samurai warriors and historical figures, with one participant portraying Maeda Toshiie. The celebration continues with traditional dancing, tea ceremonies, and dynamic taiko drum performances in the streets.

The festival kicks off on Friday evening with candle-lit lanterns floating along the Asanogawa River, followed by the grand parade on Saturday. At the castle, enjoy a Noh drama performance by firelight, making this event an unforgettable blend of culture and history.
