In Karuizawa, the main travel hub is Karuizawa Station, which is served by the Hokuriku Shinkansen, local trains, buses, and highway buses. While you can walk to some nearby spots, many attractions are spread out across the town. To get around, it’s best to use a bus, taxi, rental bike, or car. A second station, Naka-Karuizawa, is just one stop away on the Shinano Railway and also useful for getting around.
Two bus companies—Kusakaru Kotsu and Seibu—run local buses to popular places like the Kyu-Karuizawa Ginza, Mikasa Hotel, and Shiraito Waterfall. There are also loop buses that stop at major attractions. You can get a Karuizawa Free Pass (2500 yen for 1 day or 3600 yen for 2 days) for unlimited bus rides and train travel between Karuizawa and Komoro. Bicycles are a fun way to explore too, with rentals starting around 500 yen per hour near the station. Rental cars are also available nearby for longer trips.

I just returned from a wonderful trip to Karuizawa, and I’m already planning my next visit! The town is absolutely charming with its cool climate and lush landscapes, perfect for a peaceful getaway. I spent my days exploring Karuizawa Ginza, enjoying the local shops and cafes, and cycling around the scenic areas. The atmosphere is so relaxed, and I loved stopping by the hot springs to unwind after a day of sightseeing.
One of the highlights of my trip was visiting the Hiroshi Senju Museum and the Former Mikasa Hotel, both offering unique experiences. The town is also close enough to Tokyo, making it easy for a weekend escape. Whether you're into outdoor activities, art, or just want to relax in nature, Karuizawa has something for everyone. It was a perfect trip, and I can't wait to return!4 weeks ago — by Wesley
