Shimizu Port

3 of 11 in Shizuoka

Shimizu Port (清水港), now part of Shizuoka City, was an independent city until 2003. It’s renowned for its stunning views of Mount Fuji, especially on clear days. Historically significant, it was mentioned in Japan’s oldest texts from the Nara Period and gained importance after Tokugawa Ieyasu chose Sumpu Castle as his retirement spot in 1605. In the early 1900s, Shimizu Port was vital for exporting Shizuoka tea and now handles various cargo including fish, natural gas, and containers.

Among the attractions at Shimizu Port is the S-Pulse Dream Plaza, a four-story waterfront shopping mall. It includes museums, movie theaters, a Ferris wheel, and a unique Shimizu Sushi Museum, which showcases the history and models of sushi. Near the shopping mall is the Kashi-no-Ichi Market, a local fish market, and the Verkehr Museum, which highlights the port’s history.
