Kofu Castle
Kofu Castle (甲府城, Kōfu-jō, also known as Maizurujo Castle), is a historic ruin in the heart of Kofu, now transformed into Maizurujo Park. The park is home to the reconstructed Inari Yagura turret, which offers stunning views from its upper floor. Visitors can also explore the Japanese garden, adding to the tranquil atmosphere. Built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in the late 16th century, the castle originally served as a symbol of his power. After the battle of Sekigahara in 1600, it was taken over by the Tokugawa clan and remained in their hands until the Meiji Restoration. Though the castle was dismantled after this period, the park preserves the original layout and stone walls, offering an insightful look into the past.
The park’s main citadel, or honmaru, is situated in the center, providing a clear view of the city and mountains surrounding Kofu. Kofu Castle's history, along with its scenic views and peaceful environment, makes it an excellent spot to visit. The reconstructed turret includes a diorama that shows what the castle looked like in its prime. With its beautiful stone walls, impressive gates, and serene garden, Kofu Castle is a must-see for anyone interested in Japan’s rich history and natural beauty.
