Hirayama Ikuo Museum

6 of 7 in Onomichi

The Hirayama Ikuo Museum of Art (平山郁夫美術館), located on Ikuchijima Island, honors the legacy of one of Japan’s most famous painters, Hirayama Ikuo (1930-2009). Known for his traditional Nihonga style, Hirayama's work often reflects his experience as a student in Hiroshima during the 1945 bombing and its aftermath. This deeply personal history inspired recurring themes of peace and cultural exchanges within the Orient, especially the transmission of Buddhism to Japan.

The museum offers a modern and inviting space with three spacious exhibition halls, a tea lounge, and a museum shop. Visitors can enjoy Hirayama’s artworks, including pieces from his entire career, alongside special exhibitions that highlight his unique contributions to Japanese art. It’s a chance to connect with both his personal story and artistic legacy.
