Kosanji Temple

3 of 7 in Onomichi

Kosanji Temple (耕三寺, Kōsanji), located on Ikuchijima Island, is a stunning example of Japanese devotion and architecture. Founded in 1936 by a businessman inspired by his love for his mother, the temple took over 30 years to complete. Visitors will be amazed by the replicas of famous Japanese structures, including the Yomeimon Gate from Nikko Toshogu and the Phoenix Hall from Byodoin. The temple's vibrant buildings are visually striking yet maintain a harmonious design.

A fascinating feature of Kosanji is its long cave, which depicts the tortures of Buddhist hell. For art enthusiasts, the Miraishin no Oka, a hilltop area made entirely of Italian marble, offers abstract sculptures and breathtaking views. Additionally, the temple houses numerous works of Buddhist and modern art. Visitors can also enjoy a meal at Cafe Cuore, an Italian restaurant located on the hill.
