Bitchu-Takahashi Travel Tips

2 of 4 in Okayama Prefecture

Takahashi (高梁), often called Bitchu-Takahashi to distinguish it from other locations, is a charming city nestled in the mountainous interior of Okayama Prefecture. This picturesque destination is best known for Matsuyama Castle, perched high on a mountain and recognized as the only original mountaintop castle in Japan. As the oldest surviving castle, it offers stunning views and a glimpse into Japan's rich history.

At the mountain's base lies Takahashi's well-preserved old town, featuring samurai residences and merchant houses that date back to the feudal era. Visitors can explore local museums and temples, including the serene Raikyuji Temple, renowned for its beautiful Zen garden designed by the famous garden designer Kobori Enshu. Takahashi promises a unique blend of historical charm and breathtaking scenery.

Getting around

In Takahashi, the old town is small and easy to explore on foot, just a short walk from the train station. It’s a great place for a relaxing stroll.

The castle sits on a steep hill north of town. If you enjoy hiking, you can walk up, but most people prefer taking a taxi to the parking lot near the top. Since the pandemic, local buses are no longer a good option for getting around the city.
