Fukiya Village

6 of 10 in Bitchu-Takahashi

Fukiya Village (吹屋) is a charming, remote district nestled in the hills of Takahashi City, just 15 kilometers west of the city center. Known for its preserved townscape, Fukiya once thrived due to its copper mine and the production of bengara, a red iron oxide pigment used for various purposes. However, by the 1920s, the decline of the copper industry and a decrease in demand for bengara marked the village’s downturn. Today, visitors can still see the distinctive bengara used on many houses, where it served both as a protective coating and for decorative purposes.

Though the village’s economy has shifted, Fukiya remains a picturesque destination with historical attractions to explore. The village is home to several notable sites, and visitors can enjoy a combination ticket for just 1000 yen, offering access to all the major attractions. From historical buildings to beautiful landscapes, Fukiya offers a step back in time and a glimpse into Japan’s rural heritage.
