Raikyuji Temple
Raikyuji Temple (頼久寺, Raikyūji) is a serene Zen Buddhist temple located in the historic town of Takahashi. Part of the Rinzai school of Japanese Zen Buddhism, it was once the residence of the esteemed feudal lord Kobori Enshu. Kobori, known for his mastery in architecture, garden design, and the tea ceremony, also designed some of Japan’s most famous castles and gardens, including Nagoya Castle and Sumpu Castle. He was deeply involved in shaping Japan's cultural landscape during the Edo period.
At Raikyuji Temple, visitors can marvel at Kobori Enshu's dry garden, which is designed with elements like islands symbolizing a crane and a turtle—both symbols of longevity and health. The garden is admired for its borrowed scenery, another signature design feature of Kobori’s work. Though visitors can enjoy the view of the garden from the temple, entry is not allowed. This peaceful location offers a glimpse into the refined world of Japanese garden aesthetics and Zen philosophy.
