From Tokyo to Izumo

By plane

From Tokyo, you can fly to Izumo with JAL in 90 minutes. Regular fares are around ¥37,000–¥39,000, but discount tickets are usually ¥15,000–¥24,000. From Izumo Airport, it’s a 30-minute bus ride to Izumoshi Station (¥720).

By train

From Tokyo, you can reach Matsue or Izumo by train in about 7 hours using daytime trains (¥21,000, fully covered by the Japan Rail Pass with Hikari), or take the 12-hour Sunrise Izumo night train (from ¥22,000, with free “nobi nobi” spots for pass holders).

By bus

From Tokyo, you can take a night bus to Matsue or Izumo in about 12 hours. Prices range from ¥5,000 to ¥16,000 depending on the company and date. With Willer’s Japan Bus Pass, it can cost as little as ¥3,000.

From Osaka, you can fly to Izumo with Japan Air Commuter in under 1 hour. Regular fares are around ¥26,000, but with discounts, you can fly for ¥11,000–¥17,000. From Izumo Airport, it’s a 25-minute bus ride to Matsue Station (¥1,050) or Izumoshi Station (¥720).

By train

From Osaka, take the Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka to Okayama (45–50 min), then transfer to the Yakumo express to Matsue (2.5 hrs) or Izumo (3 hrs). The trip costs about ¥13,000, and seat reservations are required on the Yakumo. The Japan Rail Pass covers the full trip if you take a Sakura train—Nozomi and Mizuho need an extra fee.

From Osaka, you can take almost hourly highway buses—including one overnight—to Matsue (4.5 hrs, ¥4,000–¥6,000) or Izumo (5.5 hrs, ¥4,500–¥6,500), depending on the company and travel date. You can book online with Willer, and international tourists can ride for just ¥2,000 with a special deal.
