From Tokyo, you can reach Matsue or Izumo by train in about 7 hours using daytime trains (¥21,000, covered by the Japan Rail Pass with Hikari), or take the overnight Sunrise Izumo train (12 hours, from ¥22,000, with free “nobi nobi” spots for pass holders).

From Tokyo, you can take a night bus to Matsue or Izumo in about 12 hours. Tickets cost ¥5,000–¥16,000, depending on the company and travel date. With a Japan Bus Pass from Willer, it can be as cheap as ¥3,000.

From Osaka, you can fly to Izumo with Japan Air Commuter in under 1 hour. Regular tickets cost around ¥26,000, but discounts often bring it down to ¥11,000–¥17,000. From Izumo Airport, it's a 25-minute bus ride to Matsue Station (¥1,050) or Izumoshi Station (¥720).

From Osaka, take the Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka to Okayama (45–50 min), then transfer to the Yakumo express to Matsue (2.5 hrs) or Izumo (3 hrs). The trip costs around ¥13,000. It’s fully covered by the Japan Rail Pass if you use a Sakura train—Nozomi and Mizuho require an extra fee.
