Meirinkan

13 of 23 in Hagi

The Former Hagi Clan School Meirinkan (旧萩藩校明倫館, Kyū Hagi Hankō Meirinkan) was established in 1718 to educate the Mori Clan’s children. Originally located on the grounds of Hagi Castle for about 130 years, it was relocated to its present location outside the former castle town to allow for expansion. After the feudal era ended, the building served as an elementary school until 2014.

Today, visitors can explore the wooden schoolhouses that remain, with two open to the public: the Honkan and Nigokan. The Honkan is free to enter and offers some tourist facilities, while the Nigokan houses a museum showcasing Hagi's feudal-era history. Exhibits highlight the region’s contributions to modernizing Japan, with items like medical tools, guns, and displays on Hagi’s World Heritage sites, including the ruins of cannon furnaces and Yoshida Shoin’s school.
