Shoin Shrine

3 of 23 in Hagi

Shoin Shrine (松陰神社, Shōin Jinja) in Hagi is dedicated to Yoshida Shoin, a pivotal figure in Japan's late feudal era who influenced the modernization of Japan. A passionate advocate for learning from the West and restoring power to the emperor, Shoin challenged the ruling shogunate. Although he didn’t live to witness the Meiji Restoration, many of his students, like Ito Hirobumi, were key figures in shaping modern Japan. Shoin's dedication to his country is evident in his sacrifice, as he was executed at the age of 30 for a failed assassination attempt on a shogunate official.

The Shoin Shrine complex includes Shoin's Former Residence, where visitors can glimpse the small room where he was held under house arrest. Adjacent to it is the Shokason Juku School, where Shoin taught his disciples. The Yoshida Shoin History Museum offers a glimpse into Shoin’s life, while the Homotsuden Treasure Hall showcases his writings. For those interested in Shoin’s influence, two Former Ito Hirobumi Residences are just a short walk away, highlighting the contrasting stages of Ito's life, from humble beginnings to becoming Japan’s first prime minister.
