Sapporo Snow Festival
The Sapporo Snow Festival (さっぽろ雪まつり, Sapporo Yuki Matsuri) is a dazzling celebration of winter magic held every February in Hokkaido’s capital. Originating in 1950 with a few snow sculptures by high school students, this event has grown into one of Japan’s most celebrated winter festivals, drawing visitors worldwide to admire breathtaking snow and ice art. The festival spans three main sites: Odori, Susukino, and Tsu Dome. Odori Park showcases massive snow sculptures, some over 25 meters wide, beautifully illuminated each night with live concerts adding to the festive ambiance.
A short subway ride away, Susukino’s vibrant district lights up intricate ice sculptures, while Tsu Dome offers family fun with snow slides, snow rafting, and food stalls. Visitors can also take in a panoramic view of the festivities from the Sapporo TV Tower, open with extended hours for both day and night experiences. The Sapporo Snow Festival is a unique, unforgettable winter experience where artistry meets the beauty of the season.
