Gion Matsuri (祇園祭), Kyoto’s iconic festival, is celebrated throughout July, with its highlight being the grand Yamaboko Junko float processions on July 17 and 24. These stunning floats, towering up to 25 meters and weighing 12 tons, are marvels of craftsmanship. Festive evenings, called Yoiyama, take place before the parades, with streets alive with food stalls and vibrant crowds. This centuries-old tradition, rooted in religious ceremonies to appease the gods, showcases Kyoto's rich cultural heritage.

Beyond the floats, visitors can watch their construction, explore open homes during the Byobu Matsuri, and witness the sacred mikoshi parades on July 17 and 24, carrying Yasaka Shrine’s deity through the streets. With festivities centered around Karasuma and Shijo streets, the event blends history and excitement, making it a must-see in Kyoto.
