The Hakata Gion Yamakasa Festival (博多祇園山笠) in Fukuoka is a thrilling summer spectacle that captivates visitors each July. Centered in Hakata, the festival climaxes with an intense time trial race at dawn on July 15. Neighborhood teams push beautifully crafted kakiyama floats along a five-kilometer course, drawing thousands of spectators to cheer them on. The atmosphere is electric, with water splashing onto the streets to cool both participants and the roads.
In addition to the race, stunning kazariyama floats—over 10 meters tall—are displayed across the city. These stationary floats showcase intricate craftsmanship and can be admired at landmarks like Hakata Station and Canal City. Leading up to the race, parades and practice runs provide plenty of excitement for visitors. The main event begins at Kushida Shrine, where teams start at 4:59 AM, ensuring an unforgettable cultural experience.
